Findings from a Latent Class Model.(2013) Kamargianni, M.; Polydoropoulou, A.The aim of this paper is to investigate and quantify the influence of various social networking (SN) usage styles on adolescents’ travel behavior. For this purpose a latent class model is developed, which incorporates SN usage styles as higher-level individual orientations influencing the number of trips made for social purposes. The latent class model consists of two parts: 1. The class membership model, which links the latent SN usage styles to socio-demographic variables; and 2. the classspecific choice model, which is a Poisson regression and shows the influence of an SN usage style and socio-economic variables on the number of trips made for social purposes. The methodology is tested with data from a survey conducted in Cyprus in 2012 and refers only to adolescents. The survey provides data on 15,693 social trips of 9,735 participants (20% of the total high-school population). The class membership model indicates that there are four latent SN usage styles, while the results of the class-specific model indicate that the rational SN usage style (Class 1) and the SN addiction (Class 3) increases the number of social trips, while the indifference in SN usage (Class 2) and non-SN-users (Class 4) affects negatively the number of social trips. The results of the study provide insights into how SN usage affects Net Generations travel behavior, and especially trip substitution vs complementarity, while the class specific model is rich in interpretation, and serves as a harbinger for policy-makers.Τεκμήριο Educating through care: music, the arts and the social value of cultural education in contemporary societies. The model adopts a macro-approach and its main constituents are a) the business cycle (GDP) convergence, b) the intensity of trade between the countries of origin and destination, and c) the variables associated to international shipping developments. The present study makes possible the identification of distinct influences on the link between a given country’s economic and port activities influences which can traced back mainly to macro policies. The elaboration of such determinants and their relationships contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics of port throughput and facilitates infrastructure planning and strategic policy decision. The present paper’s conclusions feature a framework for modeling the relationship between ports and shipping activities. Panel data from European main ports for the period 1986-2010 were used for the empirical investigation and a dynamic panel GMM estimation technique was employed. Στη γεωπολιτική σκέψη των Γερμανών η σύναψη στενών σχέσεων με την Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία αποτελούσε μονόδρομο, ο οποίος θα μπορούσε να ανακόψει την υπερεξάπλωση της Μ. Βρετανίας. Ιδίως όταν η τελευταία προσέγγισε τη Ρωσία, με τελικό διακύβευμα τον από κοινού έλεγχο των Στενών του Βοσπόρου και των Δαρδανελλίων. Για τις ελληνικές στρατηγικές επιδιώξεις η συγκυρία ήταν ιδανική: έμελλε να επιλεγεί από τη Μ. Βρετανία και τη Γαλλία για να αποτελέσει τη νέα περιφερειακή δύναμη που θα αντικαθιστούσε την καταρρέουσα Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία. Η Ελλάδα, υπό την ιδιοφυή άσκηση της ελληνικής εξωτερικής πολιτικής από τον Ελευθέριο Βενιζέλο σε εκείνη την κρίσιμη, αλλά πολλά υποσχόμενη ιστορική συγκυρία, μπορεί τώρα να πραγματώσει τη Μεγάλη Ιδέα. Το εθνικό όραμα της που είχε επωασθεί στο συλλογικό ασυνείδητο των Ελλήνων ήδη από την Άλωση της Κωνσταντινούπολης. Υπήρχε, όμως, η αναγκαία σύμπνοια στο ελληνικό πολιτικό περιβάλλον για την επίτευξη αυτού του γιγαντιαίου στόχου; Οι πολιτικοί αντίπαλοι του Βενιζέλου, οι αντιβενιζελικοί, θα προέτασσαν το εθνικό συμφέρον από το πολιτικό ή θα τορπίλιζαν τον Βενιζέλο παρασύροντας τον σε κάποιο μοιραίο λάθος; Στο έργο υποστηρίζεται η άποψη ότι σε ένα περισσότερο υγιές πολιτικό περιβάλλον οι υψηλές δυνατότητες του Βενιζέλου θα μπορούσαν να οδηγήσουν στην ολοκλήρωση του εθνικού οράματος.Εκείνη η κρίσιμη περίοδος είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντική για την εξαγωγή χρήσιμων και διδακτικών συμπερασμάτων. Συμπεράσματα που ανάγονται και στην τρέχουσα ελληνική πραγματικότητα. Ενώ ο ελληνικός λαός υπόκειται σε ιδιαίτερα επαχθείς θυσίες, δεν υπάρχει κανένα όραμα για το μέλλον. Και αυτό καθιστά ακόμη δυσκολότερη την απαγκίστρωση των Ελλήνων από τη δυσάρεστη πραγματικότητα που βιώνουν. Αυτή είναι στην πραγματικότητα η μεγάλη αδικία. Η αδικία που συντελέστηκε στην περίπτωση της Μικρασιατικής Καταστροφής δεν αφορά μόνον στην απώλεια των εδαφών της Μικράς Ασίας. Αφορά και στην αδικία που βίωσε ο ελληνικός λαός στο μέτρο που πολέμησε σκληρά για την ολοκλήρωση αυτού του εθνικού οράματος τόσο στη Μικρά Ασία, όσο και στη Ελλάδα, με στερήσεις και απώλειες αγαπημένων προσώπων. Ο ηρωισμός που επέδειξαν τα ελληνικά στρατεύματα στη Μικρά Ασία ξεπέρασε κάθε προσδοκία.
